Great Year

Hi everyone,

Just a quick, collective pat on the back to you all for a great year. We've made great strides in getting our name and the DGS name out there, and we've put together some projects and events (Apply Yourself, Majors and Minors Fair, the upcoming DGStudents web pages) that offer great services to the DGS and campus communities.

And we're kind of fun to be around.

Let's start thinking about ideas for next year. A speakers' series? Some more social events? New web pages? Something completely different? Let's keep the conversation going.

Have a great summer.

Welcome Back--And Then Some

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to welcome everyone back to campus. As you (hopefully) know by now, we'll be holding our first full group meeting of the semester next Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 4:30. The small group focused on publicity has already gotten together this semester, and it looks like we'll have some campus visibility within a few weeks here. This'll be a terrific way to create momentum as we head into Apply Yourself (the ICT fair). If anyone from the publicity group has any notes or descriptions to add in terms of the direction the group is heading, I'm sure we'd all love an update.

Also, please take a minute or two to check out the new DGSociety online space: http://www.dgs.uiuc.edu/dgsociety/index.html
And the main DGS site: http://www.dgs.uiuc.edu/

I'd like us to start thinking about how we can contribute to one of these spaces in order to have a more student-oriented and student-friendly resource center on the site. Feel free to bounce around any fledgling or fully formed ideas on this blog.

See you all soon.

Check out this video

Hi all,

Sarah Watson showed a few of us advisors this video from Creighton...might be exactly the kind of thing we could do...or at least we could use for inspiration. Check it--it's on right side, middle of the page.

Of course, we'll probably have plenty of good ideas...but we also need some technicians. Does anyone have skill in web design? Back-end site construction? General graphic design? I'm no ace on this front, I'll admit.

i like the 'discover yourself' slogan/magnifying glass imagery for promoting DGS as a whole (rather than particularly DGSociety). i thought it might be nifty to use the magnifying glass to zoom in on the 'you' of 'yourself' just to make the logo a little more eye-catching. see crappy rough sketch above (thanks once again to paint). just an idea...

i also like the 'let DOGS roam and they'll find their way home' slogan/dog imagery. if we do a two-part blitz campaign, we could use the 'discover yourself' slogan/imagery for DGS as a whole, and later do a second installment featuring the "dogs" slogan/imagery to focus specifically on us as the DGSociety.

also, i agree with Brandi's suggestion that we should put 'brought to you by--" or "for more info, contact--" "DGSociety" on all promotional materials for the Division of General Studies, just so we have our name out there and associated with the DGS.

Cheers

Hey - just wanted to chime in with a kudos to the DGSociety for the great work you have doen so far this semester. Your participation at Orange and Blue Days, Majors and Minors Fair, the Open House with the Provost, and the Learning Communities meeting last week has directly and positively impacted each event and really made it more meaningful.

So, thanks again and keep up with the excellent work!
