Check out this video
Sarah Watson showed a few of us advisors this video from Creighton...might be exactly the kind of thing we could do...or at least we could use for inspiration. Check it--it's on right side, middle of the page.

Of course, we'll probably have plenty of good ideas...but we also need some technicians. Does anyone have skill in web design? Back-end site construction? General graphic design? I'm no ace on this front, I'll admit.

i like the 'discover yourself' slogan/magnifying glass imagery for promoting DGS as a whole (rather than particularly DGSociety). i thought it might be nifty to use the magnifying glass to zoom in on the 'you' of 'yourself' just to make the logo a little more eye-catching. see crappy rough sketch above (thanks once again to paint). just an idea...
i also like the 'let DOGS roam and they'll find their way home' slogan/dog imagery. if we do a two-part blitz campaign, we could use the 'discover yourself' slogan/imagery for DGS as a whole, and later do a second installment featuring the "dogs" slogan/imagery to focus specifically on us as the DGSociety.
also, i agree with Brandi's suggestion that we should put 'brought to you by--" or "for more info, contact--" "DGSociety" on all promotional materials for the Division of General Studies, just so we have our name out there and associated with the DGS.

Retreat...or something
Chatting with a few of you the other night, the point came up that we don't have much time to socialize in the group...and it would be cool if we had the chance to do this, to really build a sense of community among us...and have fun while we're at it. We talked about a camping trip or some overnighter (which means we need a fund-raising crew....) or day trips to places in the region or bowling or whatever. And, naturally, trust falls and relay races and.... Of course, any of this would be optional.
Point is: Throw out some ideas. What do you think? Big, small, whatever...thoughts?

DGSociety Video
Today we all talked about making a link off of the DGSociety webpage so that everyone around campus can see how AWESOME we are, and I talked about making a cool video to be the intro to the site. I went online and found the video that I was referring to so feel free to take a look and let us all know what you think. If we had the first-person perspective of a student walking all around campus in that fast-forward kind-of-way and then ending up inside the DGS building, I think that it would let people know that we are everywhere around campus. I also think it would be a cool way to introduce who we are and what we do in the DGSociety.
Thanks!
Corey

Oh, and you might need to have a Facebook profile with the video application to view it . Sorry to anyone who doesn't have those things...if anyone knows how to get around that, let me know.

Meeting reminder and more
Reminder...meetings this week, Wednesday and alternate meeting on Friday. See the main DGS Headquarters for precise details: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/cmmaier/www/gcc/index.html
Thanks to everyone who's responded re: your interests and skills. Looks like we're going to have people singing at our meetings, tossing the football over the big table, and documenting all the madness. Actually, this info gives me a great sense of the sorts of projects we might tackle. At this next meeting, we're going to begin hammering out the shape of our yearlong project, which will involve a student-focused and largely student-created portion of the DGS website. Please do some thinking in advance of the meeting in terms of what sorts of things should be/might be included on such a site. And please feel free to post some initial ideas here, to get us thinking.
Also, I'd like to move forward with the next small project, which will be, basically, a publicity campaign for DGSociety. Posters? Something else? What? Where? Why? I want to have some serious conversations about anticipated outcomes and, thus, appropriate strategies. This is going to be a great opportunity for those of you into graphic design, marketing, or advertising to flex your muscles and hopefully have a huge impact on how our society (and DGS itself) is seen on campus. Give me some thoughts on this front, too...including Leah's DoGS idea, the fun poster idea she came up with, etc. Sarah Watson is going to head this head.
Thanks everyone.

Our Image
At our first Wednesday meeting, Leah made the casual comment that we could consider branding our organization, the DGSociety, using the idea of DOGS (Division Of General Study)--an idea that lends a lot of fun possibilities, including ready-made visual imagery and a lot of fun slogans. (One that's been suggested, for a poster or something like that, was "DoGS: Students' best friends."
After last Wednesday's meeting, there was some email follow-up on this idea, and when we talked about it at last Friday's alternate meeting, everyone seemed enthusiastic. This (or perhaps some other idea) seems a great way to get our specific group's name out there, give us cred and make people around campus curious about/aware of us...all while promoting the Division of General Studies.
What do you think? This could possibly turn into the next project, esp if we have people with graphic design interests--not to mention everything from budgeting to placement research, etc.
Share some thoughts....
